Do Pop Culture and Trends Influence an Election?

In days past a presidential candidate made appeals to labor unions, military personnel, farmers, industrialists and quite a long list of common people. Today candidates are courting voters from the gays, the MTV generation, abortion proponents and a melee of other emerging social groups.

We think this says a lot about those who want to govern but to be honest it says even more about the governed. When the people get what they want it can be as deadly as when a dictator gets what they want depending on the social climate of the day.

Uncounted numbers of folks watched as the new millennium came in and even though many were unbelievers they watched to see if the predictions of the over zealous doomsayers and widely known prognosticators were correct.

When no global catastrophes ensued and Christ didn't return on a cloud with the armies of heaven they didn't just relax, they got going again with a vengeance. Now real social changes won't be interfered with by some higher power or the God of creation interfering.

After the events of 9/11 the country seemed a little more humble. Commentators and news people were talking about New Yorkers who now actually looked you right in the eye when they talked with you. A lot less cursing was heard in everyday conversation and random acts of kindness were occurring more frequently. What happened to all that?

When Moses gave the people the Ten Commandments and the hygienic, ceremonial and moral laws they spent years finding ways to circumvent or misapply them. By the time the Savior appeared they had perverted the laws so severely that Christ spent most of his time with the Pharisees rebuking them for their twisted representation of Moses laws.

Forget waiting for the close of a millennium the ancient Israelites couldn't wait a few days. While Moses was off getting the Ten Commandments the people decided it was taking too long and perhaps Moses was dead after all. (Exodus 32) They commissioned Aaron the high priest to make them a golden calf to worship.

The only reason history repeats itself is because while knowledge may be increased human nature stays the same. Concerning the second coming of Christ both Jesus and his apostles warned that people would choose a golden calf every time when the promises looked as if they would never be fulfilled.

Jesus said "But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Mt. 24: 37-39

The apostle Peter speaking about the prevailing attitude of folks just before the second coming said "Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were..." (2 Peter 3:3, 4)

It is said that we don't draw to ourselves what we want but in reality we draw what we are. What the people become and what they want requires a leader who is on the same page. It has become apparent that America is calling for a leader for the times. But what times are these?

God and his prophets are not hindered by the acceptable delineations of time. To God and his prophets the past, present and future are all in the same lump. God knows it all and he reveals it to his own. They must let it be known to the people whether it is believed or not. That prophecy is pre-written history is the rule of the prophet.

Sad as it may be the future does not get better and better for our country or the world. People will continue to call for leaders that conform to both the status quo and the trends of the day. They will get what they want.

In the eighth chapter of Isaiah Samuel the prophet is found warning the people that their choice to have a king rule over them like the surrounding nations will bring them great grief. God had given them all they needed to live and victory over their enemies but they wanted a king. They chose one who was head and shoulders above the rest. He had the best appearance and the finest rhetoric of the bunch...enter Saul!

It was the Rubicon that sealed Israel's fate for years to come. God told Samuel to give the people what they wanted because they were not rejecting the prophet; they were rejecting Him.

Today in America we have candidates who claim to have a connection with God but on closer examination they may be merely connected to a religion. The difference is vast. As Jesus said when discernment is barely enough to see what they really stand for; then we can all become fruit inspectors. "Ye shall know them by their fruits..." (Mt 7:16)

The fruit of ignoring the business of abortion is the death of millions of innocent children. The fruit of allowing gay and lesbian agendas to be put on a scale with race or creed is flirting with impending judgment.

No harping no preaching just this reminder to all of America..." There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12

Election time in the United States is one of the most exciting things about America. Other nations may get stuck with leaders they don't want or elections that are rigged but we have a pretty good system here. It behooves us to make our choices wisely and circumspectly for the future of our own.

No one can tell us who to vote for and endorsements or criticism notwithstanding voting will always be a matter of the conscience. Choose wisely America!
